A perhaps less known illustrator; Claire A Nivola (b. 1947). Her illustrations are beautiful, telling a story in wonderful detail.

Maira Kalman

She was born in Israel (1949) but came to US at the age of four. She now lives in New York. I find her work sparkling, full of humour. Her illustrations tell a story and I just love her ABC book. 

Paul O Zelinsky

This American illustrator (b.1953) won the Caldecott medal in 1998.
